💡 THE 30-MINUTE JOB SEARCH

A lot of job-search advice assumes you're unemployed and frantic, refreshing boards at midnight and firing off twenty applications a day. If you're already employed and only half-looking, that approach is exhausting and unrealistic. You don't need a sprint. You need a casual routine you can run in half an hour and then forget about.

A passive search has a simpler aim: stay aware of what's out there, keep a read on your own market value, and be ready to move the day something genuinely better shows up. Thirty minutes a week covers all three. The routine breaks into four short blocks.

Scan, don't apply (5 minutes)

Open a board or two and skim what's new in your field. You're not applying yet, you're calibrating: which titles keep appearing, what they pay, which companies are hiring in bulk. Save anything that makes you look twice and move on. A weekly skim keeps you current on what your skills are worth.

Keep one document current (10 minutes)

Instead of rebuilding your resume in a panic when the perfect role appears, spend ten minutes keeping a running brag doc: the projects you shipped, the metrics that moved, the wins worth listing. When you do apply, the part you dread is already written.

Send one signal (5 minutes)

Reply or reach out to one recruiter, reconnect with one former colleague, or leave a genuine comment on one post in your field. Passive doesn't mean invisible. A single touch a week keeps your network warm, which is how the better opportunities find you instead of the other way around.

Apply to what you flagged in your scan (10 minutes)

Take the two or three roles you flagged during the scan and actually send the applications. A handful a week adds up fast, and none of it costs you a weekend. This is also the part software like JobCopilot handles best. This tool can watch the boards for new matches and apply to them for you in the background, folding the scan and the applications into one hands-off stream. If you don't want it to actually apply, it can just prepare the application for you so you can review it and send on your own time once you verify it's worth it.

Done week after week, thirty minutes compounds. Inside a month you'll have a clear read on your market, a resume that's ready to send, a warmer network, and a handful of applications already in, none of it earned by grinding. When the right role finally pops up, you're not starting from zero. You're just making a few quick tweaks and hitting send.

Keep applying,
